Prosperity and Jobs

South Australia must make a transition to a cleaner and greener economy that supports job-rich industries and prepares us to meet the challenges of climate change and peak oil.

We need a highly efficient low carbon economy powered mainly by renewable energy within this generation; revitalisation of small business, local economic activity and local communities; just and efficient tax and revenue systems that address our agreed social, economic and ecological goals; and a boom in new, sustainable jobs to replace our declining manufacturing base.

The Greens campaign....

Prosperity and Jobs

Anyone listening to the State Government would swear our state’s economic future rests on a big expansion in the mining and defence industries. But did you know the mining industry employs just 1.5% of workers and the defence industry just 1.3%?

The Greens think we should be focusing elsewhere to help shift the SA economy away from its traditional focus on manufacturing, and prepare ourselves for a more prosperous future. We need to find solutions to our rapidly ageing population, create genuinely sustainable water supplies and affordable public transport in our urban sprawl, and stop our electricity grid being over-run by air-conditioners at peak times, to name just a few of the challenges we face.

If we spend billions of dollars recreating our transport and energy systems we will create jobs, and lots of them.  For example, a national ‘gross’ feed in tariff to transform and diversify our energy mix.

Equally, investing in early intervention in health and education will mean we have to spend less in the future fixing up broken systems and people.

Once we find solutions to our problems here, we will then be in a great position to export them to the world, guaranteeing smart jobs and viable industries into the future.
