|Time to give fracking the boot
Today’s report from the Parliamentary Natural Resources Committee into fracking for gas in the South East confirms what the Greens have known for years - that fracking does not have community consent, poses serious risks to the environment and is based on dodgy economics, according to Mark Parnell MLC, Parliamentary Leader, Greens SA.
“The community in the South East has overwhelmingly rejected this industry, with thousands vowing to “Lock the Gate” against gas companies seeking access. I’m glad that the Parliamentary Committee has carefully noted their concerns.
|Greens National Conference rejects nuclear dump
The National Conference of the Australian Greens has called on both South Australian and Federal Governments to halt any further moves towards establishing an international high level nuclear waste dump in South Australia.
The nuclear dump motion was put on the agenda of the Greens National Conference (held over the weekend in Perth) by Mark Parnell MLC, Parliamentary Leader of the Greens SA, and passed unanimously.
|Passenger levy should end when taxi compo ends
The Greens are urging the South Australian Government to guarantee an end date to its $1 per trip passenger levy, which is being introduced to compensate the taxi industry following the entry of Uber into the market.
“The Government acknowledges that it will collect sufficient revenue to pay its compensation commitments within four years, however the levy will last forever,” said Mark Parnell MLC, Parliamentary Leader of the Greens SA.
“This means that the passenger levy will simply become a new tax long after the purpose for which it was raised has been satisfied.”
